Well Played Pup, Well Played

When taking your puppy to the vet, do not leave him in the unlocked car with the keys inside while you stop for gas. He will lock you out, you will walk home for your spare key that you don't have, and you will have to call to police to come help you get back in your car. #LFMF

I assume you must have left the windows rolled up. Serves you right. Your never supposed to leave an animal alone in the car with the windows rolled up.

Also. Why the heck would you leave keys in the car? Let alone an unlocked car. Do you want it to be stolen?

    • LARPkitten says:

Maybe so the puppy could enjoy the heater/air conditioning while she went about paying for her gas?

She was taking the puppy to the vet and had to stop for gas. This is not unreasonable.

      • ClariPossum says:

You’re supposed to turn off the engine to get gas, so I doubt the reason was so the dog could enjoy the a/c or the heat. However, I think it’s better to leave a dog in the car while you pump gas so the dog doesn’t either run off or so you don’t have to hold onto a leash.

        • Emellle says:

It’s also better to take the keys with you anyway when getting gas, and even lock the door. That way you can step away to pay/grab a Big Gulp/get help with a recalcitrant pump/find a squeegee, without having your car or its contents (in this case a highly-intelligent puppy) stolen.

    • ClariPossum says:

OP stopped FOR GAS. OP was RIGHT next to the car.

    • Lizzy says:

Turn off the car, but leave the keys in the ignition while you use your credit card to pay at the pump. The dog is never out of your sight, and you are less than a foot away from it, so really no need to worry about heatstroke for the short time it takes to pump gas. But, it steps on the “lock” button while looking at you through the window. Now, you’ve suddenly got a problem.

Also, please crate your small animals and get seatbelt harnesses for your big ones. Airbags do horrible things to unrestrained animals. I’ve seen it firsthand.

      • RealDealSally says:

How about you just get smart and take the keys out when the car isn’t running. Especially when you’re pumping gas. Especially when you have left a pet in the car which has obvious behavioral issues and can’t sit where it’s been told. Especially if you don’t have a spare key on you.

Or roll the window down two inches.

        • Chris says:

Agreed. Always remove your keys from your ignition. In fact, generally it’s better to just remove the keys from the car period. Many insurance companies will NOT offer any payout if they find you left the key in the car, in a theft case. Some jurisdictions will even fine YOU for aiding in the theft.

That said, it seems the puppy expressed, eloquently, his disinterest in receiving his shots. :P

    Well played, pup.

  3. algor says:

NEVER leave your keys in your car.

    Learn the sequence:

    Getting to the car:

Sit. Buckle down. Key to the ignition. Foot on the brake. Start the engine. Disengage the parking prake. Shift to the gear. Drive.

    Stopping and getting out:

Engage the parking brake. Shift to P. Stop the engine. Take the key out of the slot. Unbuckle the seat belt. Get out. Lock from outside.

    • Bee says:

Or for people driving real cars:

Sit. Buckle down. Key to the ignition. Foot on clutch. Start the engine. Disengage the parking brake. Shift to first gear. Disengage clutch and drive.

      Stopping and getting out:

Engage the parking brake. Shift gear to neutral. Stop the engine. Take the key out of the slot. Unbuckle the seat belt. Get out. Lock from outside.

      (just joking, of course)

    • Emellle says:

All good, but some of us are the opposite of OCD, so you’ll please forgive us if we change it up now and then, or check for texts before we start the engine so we can safely reply, or adjust the radio or mirrors somewhere in there, or open or close the windows, or wait for the NPR story to finish ….
Also, I usually shift to P before stepping on the emergency brake, in case I’m klutzy enough to shift my foot off the regular brake. Is that wrong?

  4. Caddie says:

Why would you call the police when there are locksmiths available?

  5. Dawn says:

If you were taking him to be neutered, it was probably deliberate.

  6. KaD says:

This would never have happened if you had a cat instead.

  7. Blink Blink says:

The dog wasn’t in a crate because…you wanted it to go through the windshield if you had to stop suddenly?

    • ClariPossum says:

Maybe OP was using a crate and let the dog loose in the car while they were stopped.

    • me says:

Even if the dog was in a seatbelt harness, in the front passenger seat, they could still hit the lock button if they got nervous that their owner was out of the car. Still, don’t leave the keys in the car, never a good idea.

    • Jennifer Caldwell says:

Who puts their dog in a crate to go down the street?

  8. SaTaN says:

Ah yes, adding insult to injury; my favourite sin…

  9. Terry says:

I don’t understand what the police have to do with it. Wouldn’t a locksmith be more appropriate?

    • domerdaver says:

Police and tow truck operators often have tools to open cars, so that they can move them in emergencies. Locksmiths deal more with locks in buildings.

  10. OhRly says:

wow mega-fail. First you don’t crate your animal, thus ensuring that if you have a crash of any kind, your animal becomes a missle. Second, you leave your animal in a closed car, which can even in winter have a temperature high enough to cause death. Third, you call the police instead of a wrecking service to break into your car, thus wasting huge amounts of time and taxpayer money.

You don’t DESERVE to own a dog. You’re not smart enough.

  11. Shipoopi says:

take your keys with you, moron

  12. Rach says:

wonder if the cops helped. When my brother was a toddler he grabbed the keys from my mom as she was shutting the door and locked himself in in 80 degree weather and the cops refused to help. Luckily some random guys at the store jimmied the door open for her. Boy, did those cops get screamed at after all was said and done.
