Just because the rat is in the trap and not moving, doesn’t necessarily mean the rat is dead. #LFMF

  1. Rich says:

    Rule #2: Double Tap.

    • CommentMaster says:

Don’t be stingy with your bullets. Especially .22 LR. Those things are -cheap-. Heck, a BB Gun would suffice at this point. Just put it to the rat’s eye.

  2. G. James says:

Been there. To test, blow a puff of air in their face. If they blink, they’re not dead.

Then you have to decide whether you’re a catch-and-release (-and-hope-they-don’t-get-back-inside) type, the type that can be hands-on for the coup de grace yourself, or the kind that can only do the latter by proxy (cat or significant other/neighbor).

  3. Kitty says:

Use something that kills them quickly at least, nothing inhumane like glue paper. Because if they only get one leg stuck they will gnaw it off to get away then you have to clean up a bloody mess, trust me.

    • calla says:

Glue traps are grotesquely cruel, never mind about “messy.”

Best bet if you must kill rats and mice is one of those Rat Zapper (TM) electrocuting traps (powered by D batteries). Instantaneously and probably painless.

  4. BStrange says:

Hadn’t gotten that far, I was still extracting the trap from behind the sink. So it went something like, “*tug* Whoa, this thing’s pretty hea…vy…. RAT! BIG RAT!!” Then Laza-rat came back to life and ran up my arm, and I got to explain my scream to my upstairs neighbor.

And Kitty, it was supposed to be quick-kill, neighbors don’t like playing Musical Rodentia. I’d just underestimated the size of the rodent it was going to catch. I was told when I moved in that due to the previous tenant being a slob (not the exact words used), the place had a small MOUSE problem they were working on. What I got was a rat five times too large for the trap.

Memo to self: buy thicker gloves, larger traps… and glasses for my landlord.

    • Kitty says:

Sorry, I didn’t mean you exactly. I was speaking more in general, guess I should have used that advice as a LFMF. Not that it’s the only one…

  5. BStrange says:

No, it’s fine. I mean, considering I’ll be looking for more suitable traps now, it was good to know!
Not to say “better you than me”, but since you beat me to it… >;D
